A few months ago, I covered several eye health myths. However, I was far from covering all of them. Sadly, vision care myths are plentiful. We’ve grown with countless vision myths ingrained as facts.

Things like watching TV too close are part of every culture. We know it’s bad, and we tell everyone it is. But, I already debunked that in my last article!

Today, we’ll tackle 5 more vision care myths. I’ll also provide the scientific research behind each.

Vision care myth #1: Squinting is bad for your eyes

Essentially, squinting is trying to make your pupils smaller. It reduces the light entering your eyes. Thus, you can focus better. In some cases, constant squinting could sign toward needing glasses.

What’s the truth?

That said, it won’t damage your eyes directly. You’re typically not even straining your eyes—just your eyelids. The real damage comes from not blinking. Squinting may reduce your blinking rate. So, be mindful of eye hydration.

Vision care myth #2: You WILL suffer the same eye issues as your parents

Many vision problems are genetic. Yet, that’s not true for all of them. Moreover, inheritance isn’t a guarantee. You might have a higher risk of certain conditions. That’s not to say you’re bound to experience them.

What’s the truth?

Genetics plays a crucial role in countless conditions, but not all. When assessing eye health, we must account for genes. But, that doesn’t mean you’ll suffer the same issues as your parents. Environmental influence and age are just as important.

Vision care myth #3: You can’t fight age-related vision deterioration

Older people need glasses. That’s a fact, right? After all, cataracts and similar conditions are dependent on age. Well, age can make some conditions more likely to manifest. But, that doesn’t mean you’re helpless.

What’s the truth?

General health advice is crucial to prevent eye problems. That’s true in young and older people alike. That’s when genetics and trauma become more important. But, you’d be surprised by how much you can delay most problems.

Vision care myth #4: Carrots improve your sight

Everyone knows carrots are outstanding for keeping your eyes healthy. They provide vitamin A, which is crucial for your vision. But, most claims could be exaggerated. Luckily, it’s not entirely false.

What’s the truth?

Vitamin A deficiency can hinder your vision considerably. Eating more vitamin A prevents these issues. That’s pretty much it. Eating carrots and vitamin A helps your eyes stay healthy. But, you won’t notice changes unless you’re suffering from the deficiency.

Vision care myth #5: It’s bad not to wear your glasses all the time

Finally, glasses basically fix your vision problems, right? That’s true, but that doesn’t mean you have to wear them all the time. You can strain your eyes more. But, we’ve already discussed that strain rarely causes long-term damage.

What’s the truth?

Not wearing glasses means you have to strain your eyes. Focusing becomes harder. So, you might experience eye fatigue and even migraines. But, your eyes aren’t “getting worse” when you don’t wear glasses.

These vision myths have been part of our lives for years. They’ve gone between generations. And, we always share them as facts.

But, we might be doing more harm than good. Thus, it’s our responsibility to dispel vision care myths.
