Everyone seems to know our memory suffers as we grow older. But, it’s not as significant as you might think. For instance, these habits have a stronger impact than age. So, let’s learn why memory worsens with age.

The link behind it isn’t quite clear. But, we know that our brains’ volume peaks in our 20s. From there, it declines. That means we might notice it’s harder to remember names or focus on many things at once.

Normal brain aging often causes the following:

  • The brain cortex shrinks.
  • Neurons atrophy or shrink.
  • Neuronal connections also become less extensive.
  • Blood flow also diminishes.

Luckily, none of these changes should be alarming. And, they shouldn’t have a huge impact on our lives.

What can you expect from your memory as you age?

You won’t forget life experience, common sense, and habits. The following are normal things to forget:

  • Where you left your keys and other items.
  • Names and memories with people.
  • Appointments or why you entered a room or started a task.
  • Specific details from conversations, reading, and instructions.

What to look out for when memory worsens with age

But, some signs go beyond what’s “normal.” Some are a bit more common, like forgetting directions. Make sure to go see a professional if you experience any of the following.

What isn’t normal

While forgetting mundane things is normal, it can get out of hand. Losing your keys now and then isn’t a big deal. Doing it every day is a problem.

The following signs should worry you:

  • Having to keep asking the same question.
  • Getting lost in locations you used to know well.

  • General confusion regarding time, places, and people.

When mild cognitive impairment and dementia become worries

MCI and dementia are more problematic than general forgetfulness. So, pay attention to the following.

For MCI:

  • Constantly forgetting recent events and information.
  • Constantly forgetting others’ names.
  • Issues coming up with words and communicating.
  • Losing focus easily and needing constant reminders.

For dementia:

  • Inability to perform daily tasks.
  • Losing awareness of memory loss.
  • Poor judgment and rational thinking.
  • Impairment to cognition and language to the point of needing assistance.

  • Following routines.
  • Learning skills.
